Found this via del.icio.us today: Pandora is a service in which you tell what kind of music you like (by example of artist or song), and Pandora sets up a “station” for you.

How it works is really cool: Instead of using music genres, a bunch of people have listened to songs from more than a myriad artists, and tried to classify them by musical “genes”. This means that if you give an example of what you like, they can come up with other music with similar “genes”. You can then do some musical “genetic engineering” by telling them if you like each song or not, and they will adjust the upcoming selection accordingly.
You get ten hours for free, after that it’s $36 for a year of unlimited use and up to 100 stations. I think I might end up paying that. This is a great way to explore music, and with my musical tastes I often have a hard time knowing where to look for new stuff.
One minor gripe, though, is that there’s a limit to the number of songs you can skip every hour—something to do with licensing, apparently. But it’s not that big a problem, really.
Try it out, and feel free to comment here and share your thoughts about it.
