Another shortcut, another frustration gone.

One day at work I exclaimed my frustration at Indesign’s habit of switching its color targeting mode from text to object upon exiting text editing mode. “I wish there was a keyboard shortcut for switching the color target to text instead of object,” I said—only in Norwegian, of course.

If you’re an Indesign user but don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s probably because I wouldn’t have the faintest idea what Indesign might call what I wanted to do, even though I’ve been using Indesign on a daily basis for the last two and a half years, and neither might you.

I’m talking about the apparent lack of a keyboard shortcut for operating the two small buttons below the colors in the Tools palette. If you still don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s a helpful screen shot from said palette, with the irrelevant bits dimmed, even:

If you hover the mouse pointer over those buttons, the tool tip says “Formatting affects container” and “Formatting affects text”, respectively. But no keyboard shortcut in the tool tip.

In my fit of frustration I went Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts… and looked up ‘Tools’ under ‘Product Area’, and whaddayaknow, there it was: Toggle Text and Object Control—shortcut: J

Judging by the amount of use this particular shortcut has seen on my computer after it was discovered, it’s been sorely missed.
