December 5, 2005: Logging how you procrastinate is scary!

One of the things you’re supposed to do while reading The Now Habit, the book I mentioned in my post about GTD yesterday is to log how you spend your time for a whole week. The point of this, of course, is to discover where, when and how you procrastinate.
As one who’s prone to do such things as read his RSS feeds and solve Sudokus during working hours, this is very scary, and so I haven’t been able to bring myself to do it yet. I’m afraid I’ll come out a bit ashamed. (But I know I’m not as bad as the American average for office workers. I can’t find the link right now, but according to research, the average American office workers puts in an hour and a half of effective work during a normal, eight hour day. The rest of the day is spent surfing the Internet, socializing around the water cooler etc.)
What’s likely to happen is that I’ll become immediately aware that I’m about to procrastinate, and so instead I’ll be doing something useful instead. Of course, this is a good thing, but it’s not being honest with myself.
But I guess being honest about it here in my own blog is a step in the right direction. The weight on my shoulder feels lighter already, and as soon as I’m back at work after being sick from stomach flu for the second time in a couple of weeks, I’ll do it. (No point in keeping a procrastination log when you’re at home, just lying/sitting around doing nothing much in the first place …)
