December 22, 2005: Kakuro, Killer Sudoku and more!
Love Sudokus, but getting a bit bored by them? Then try something else, but similar!

Do you think regular Sudokus are getting boring? The last half a year has seen a Sudoku craze around here, but now it seems the publishers think the public is ready for something else. I bought a small book entitled “Kakuro” the other day, containing many different puzzles, mostly Kakuros, of course. “And what are those?” you might be wondering.
Kakuro (or Kakro, as it’s called at Puzzle Japan) is kind of a mathematical crossword. But although there’s a little bit of math involved (adding and subtracting numbers mostly below 40), you quickly learn to recognize some patterns and unique sums (like 7 in three squares has to be 1+2+4). I think it’s great fun.
Also, Killer Sudoku is a blend of Sudoku and Kakuro, where you have to use logic from both kinds of puzzles. I think I like Killer Sudoku better than normal Sudoku.
The book I bought also features Slither Link puzzles, which also are fun, but radically different from Sudoku, Kakuro and Killer Sudokus.
For even more “square grid” kinds of puzzles, head over to Puzzle Japan—they have quite a selection available for online play.
