December 16, 2006: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Adobe amazes again.

Adobe has released Photoshop CS3 Beta. I’m downloading it as I blog, so this entry is based only on what I’ve seen online so far, especially on MacWorld’s First Look article and their demo video. Read and watch those for the yummy details.

What I want to say here is that Adobe has really delivered exciting stuff with the CS packages, and it looks like they’re not going to stop any time soon.

Granted, I imagine many of the things they’ve included now are things they’ve been thinking of for a long time, but that they had to wait until computers were powerful enough. Take the Smart Filters, for example: I’m pretty sure they thought of that when they implemented Adjustment Layers (or that they thought of both Adjustment Layers and Smart Filters when they invented layers), but that it wouldn’t be usable on those days’ computers. For all I know, they might have even more powerful layer stuff in the making for CS4 when computers are even more powerful.

And I imagine my article on masking will need some revision with the arrival of the Quick Selection brush. (Actually, it could use some revision anyhow, since I’ve refined my masking technique since I wrote that.)

Like I said, I’m downloading it now, so I’ll see how it works later today. I’m just hoping my license number (that I’ve borrowed from my workplace) is accepted when applying for a license number for Photoshop CS3 Beta.
