December 14, 2005: Free music from Mercedes-Benz!

And good music, too!

Mercedes-Benz does something cool: They scour the Internet for good, free music, and make compilations that they publish periodically—every two months or so, I think. If you go to mixed-tape.com, you’re redirected to their latest “Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape”—a compilation of 15 songs “that knows no bounds”:

15 talented newcomers from four continents present the sound of tomorrow – available here as a free-of-charge MP3 download compilation.

So, go there and download the whole compilation and put it on your iPo… er, I mean MP3… I mean portable music player of choice. Or listen to the tracks in their Flash player popup window application gizmo thingy. (It seems to be leaking memory or something, though, because it locked up my Firefox after being left open for a few hours, and Safari complained that some script would probably cause it to hang pretty soon and would I please stop the script before my whole computer goes “boom!”.)

Very cool stuff indeed, and the coolest thing is the strong sense I get that this is provided by people who really care about music and want to share the experience. It doesn’t feel as much as a publicity stunt as something someone has a deep passion about, and then their boss is cool enough to let them do something about it.

I’m definitely setting up a Backpack reminder for February 28, 2006, which is when the next compilation will be available. (Of course, I could just sign up for their newsletter, but that wouldn’t be very “Web 2.0”, would it now?)
