December 11, 2005: Dance, dance to the max!

Some time in November, Christina and I agreed that we wouldn’t make eachother Christmas calenders this year, as we have enough to do and worry about. While they’re very nice and fun to get and open during Advent, they’re a ton of work to do. 24 different things that should also at the same time be easy on the budget and cool is not easy to find.

Then she went shopping, since Hyndla definitely had to have one. (We’re not cruel.) And came back with a lottery scratch ticket with 24 small areas to scratch. For me.

The ball was in my yard.

Only I was playing Sudoku instead, or something.

“But I thought we agreed …” didn’t cut it. (I know, I know, I should’ve seen it coming.)

So after several not so subtle hints that an Advent present instead would suffice, I went out and bought her something I’d originally intended as a Christmas present: Dancing Stage Max (or Dance Dance Revolution, I think it’s called in the US)—including a dance mat, of course.

As one who dislikes the very idea of doing aerobics—I’ve never tried, but I’m sure I’d hate it—I’m very positively surprised at how fun it is! I spent probably more than three hours playing it yesterday while home alone. Had a go for another hour again today, and there was significant improvement in my skills.

This is something I’ve noticed while practicing playing something on a piano or synth too. You’ll practice for a while and get better up to a certain point, and then you start messing up and you’re unable to do it perfectly. But when you try it the next day, you can do it easily. I think this is because the brain needs some time rewiring the brain, and that much of this happens during sleep.

Anyway, if you haven’t tried it, you should! It’s fun, challenging and also a good excuse to move your butt! But do get two mats (or a dual one) at once, or else you won’t be able to compete.
